What is a Socratic Seminar?
The Socratic Seminar is a teaching method that can be used to discuss a piece of literature, critique a work of art or an historical event, or work at solving a math problem. In the case of literature, it takes the form of a group discussion that centers on a short piece of writing where students learn to analyze text and interpret meaning.
The seminar is circular in form, with everyone having an equal place and an equal share in the discussion.
Unlike a didactic approach where the teacher questions and the student answers, the student in a seminar becomes responsible for the analysis of a piece of literature. The student learns that there is not always a "right" answer. The focus of a seminar is on understanding the language of the text and the meaning of the text. Students learn that they must back up their answers with specific references to the text.
The Socratic seminar is a technique that can lead to a deeper understanding of what is read, to the development of critical thinking skills, and to better social skills as participants learn to participate in group dynamics. Students learn to have an inquiring mind, to be reflective, to contemplate the responses of their peers, and to re-examine their own positions.
